A new electric vehicle, the third-generation Nissan LEAF, stands out as a top contender for 2026, qualifying for the government’s £3,750 Electric Car Grant. This compact SUV redesign of the iconic model has secured the ‘Car to Watch’ accolade from industry experts, with deliveries slated to begin in February.
Design and Performance Upgrades
The revamped LEAF shifts from its traditional hatchback design to a more versatile compact SUV chassis. It offers battery options of 52kWh or 75kWh, delivering an impressive range of 271 to 386 miles on a single charge. Powered by 215 horsepower and 355Nm of torque, the vehicle accelerates from 0-62mph in 7.6 seconds and reaches a top speed of 100mph.
Industry Recognition and Pricing
Andrew Walker, Editor of Company Car and Van, highlighted the LEAF’s value, stating: “We’re delighted to include the all-electric Nissan LEAF in our annual list of award winners. The car that started it all has a new lease of life for 2026. The British-built LEAF arrives to stiff competition and whilst it may not rewrite the rulebook as it once did, a combination of generous pricing, an excellent maximum range, clever tech and decent handling make it our Car to Watch for 2026.”
With the government grant, the starting price drops to £32,249, positioning it competitively against rivals like the Renault 4. The Department for Transport confirmed the model’s eligibility for the incentive last November.
UK Manufacturing and Broader Impact
Production will take place at Nissan’s Sunderland factory in the UK, supporting local jobs and the push toward electric mobility. James Taylor, managing director of Nissan GB, ed enthusiasm: “A big thanks to the team at Company Car & Van for recognising the talents of our fantastic British-built LEAF electric car and awarding it their Car to Watch in 2026. We couldn’t agree more with their assessment. Together with our other fully electric models – including the all-new Micra and Ariya, plus the Townstar and Interstar vans – Nissan has a rapidly expanding electric portfolio with real appeal to company car fleets and we look forward to welcoming new customers to our brand.”
This launch bolsters Nissan’s growing lineup of electric vehicles, appealing to businesses and individual buyers seeking efficient, eco-friendly options.
