Leaders from major political parties in West Bengal, including TMC, BJP, Congress, and Left, convened with the Election Commission’s full bench in Kolkata to review preparations for the upcoming Assembly elections.
Rare Agreement on Election Schedule
In an unusual show of unity, representatives from these parties called on the Election Commission to conduct the polls in a single phase or, at most, two phases. They also demanded robust deployment of Central Armed Police Forces to secure the process.
EC’s Commitment to Fair Polls
The Election Commission pledged to implement all required measures for free and fair elections, addressing the parties’ concerns directly.
Political Tensions Erupt
Despite the consensus, friction emerged as Trinamool Congress leaders accused authorities of intimidating officials during the meeting. Separately, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar encountered protests and black flags while visiting a temple in Kolkata.
