It’s “reckoning day” for California.
The Trump administration introduced Wednesday it can withhold $160 million in funding to California after the Golden State missed a deadline to revoke 17,000 industrial driver’s licenses the feds say had been improperly issued to unlawful immigrants.
“It’s reckoning day for Gavin Newsom and California,” US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy stated in a press release.
“Our calls for had been easy: observe the principles, revoke the unlawfully-issued licenses to harmful international drivers, and repair the system so this by no means occurs once more,” Duffy added. “[Gavin] Newsom has failed to take action – placing the wants of unlawful immigrants over the protection of the American individuals.”
In September, a nationwide audit revealed greater than 25% of immigrant CDL’s issued by California had been unlawful, together with licenses that expired years previous the expiration date of their lawful presence documentation.
The Transportation Division gave a deadline of January 5 deadline to cancel the licenses.
California initially agreed to revoke the licenses, however in December introduced it could delay the revocations to present immigrants who legally qualify an opportunity to maintain them.
