Chris Hemsworth sparks debate among Australian fans by calling ‘I’m not here to f**k spiders’ a common Aussie slang phrase.
The 42-year-old Marvel star shared the expression during a TikTok video chat with British comedian Munya Chawawa. Asked how he’d say he’s ‘not here to waste time’ in Aussie slang, Hemsworth replied, ‘I’m not here to f**k spiders.’
This phrase, dating back to the 1970s and used by celebrities like Margot Robbie, means avoiding trivial tasks or messing around—essentially, ‘not here to f*** around.’
Fan Reactions Pour In
Responses under Chawawa’s video highlight the divide. Many Australians claim they’ve never heard it.
‘Where in Australia has this ever been said? NEVER,’ one commenter wrote. Another added, ‘Who says that even??? I’m an Aussie and I don’t say that.’
Some accused it of being fabricated: ‘No one in Australia says this. I’m convinced Margot Robbie made it up as a joke.’
Others defended it, suggesting regional differences. ‘If you haven’t heard this saying, you can’t convince me you’re actually Australian,’ one fan stated.
A West Australian commenter noted, ‘As a West Australian, I have heard this saying plenty. Chris is not alone.’
Another affirmed, ‘This is so real whoever is Aussie and hasn’t said this, you’re not Aussie lad.’
Hemsworth’s Life in Australia
Hemsworth recently called moving from Hollywood to Australia the ‘greatest decision.’ He and wife Elsa Pataky relocated from Los Angeles in 2015, buying a $7 million farm in Byron Bay, a surf town south of the Gold Coast.
On the SmartLess podcast with Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett, Hemsworth explained the move coincided with his sons’ birth amid paparazzi pressure. ‘It was right around the time my boys were born, and it was just, we kind of were set up in LA and not enjoying it,’ he said. ‘We were filming kind of everywhere else… and then you’d come home and paparazzi and all the sort of the trappings of living in that space.’
The couple, married since 2010, raise daughter India Rose, 13, and 11-year-old twin sons Sasha and Tristan in Byron Bay.
