Crystal Dynamics has initiated its fourth round of layoffs within the past 12 months, affecting 20 employees across development and central operations roles. The studio maintains full commitment to its upcoming projects, Tomb Raider: Catalyst and Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis.
History of Layoffs
Previous reductions include 17 staff members in March of last year, an unspecified number in August, and just under 30 in November. These actions follow a major restructuring at the studio.
Official Statement on Restructuring
Crystal Dynamics explains that such decisions come after careful consideration, especially post-restructuring. “As our current projects move into new phases of development, we continuously take a hard look at our team structures to ensure they align with our long-term studio goals,” the studio states in its announcement.
The company notes efforts to reassign staff internally where possible. “While we always strive to transition our people into new roles whenever possible, we have unfortunately reached a point where these departures are necessary,” it adds. Crystal Dynamics expresses gratitude: “We are incredibly grateful for the passion and hard work these individuals have poured into our games and our studio.”
Support for Affected Employees
Affected workers receive severance packages and job placement assistance. The studio invites other organizations with openings to contact those impacted.
Ongoing Tomb Raider Development
Despite the changes, Crystal Dynamics reaffirms its dedication to Tomb Raider: Catalyst, the next mainline entry, and Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, a remake of the original game. Both titles were unveiled last December.
