Donnie Wahlberg shares possibilities for his wife Jenny McCarthy and brother Mark Wahlberg appearing in future episodes of his Blue Bloods spinoff, Boston Blue.
Discussions on Jenny McCarthy’s Role
Wahlberg, 56, confirms that he and McCarthy have explored cameo ideas. “Jenny and I have discussed it. We’ve all discussed what she could possibly do on the show,” he states. McCarthy, 53, was once offered a role on Blue Bloods early in their relationship, but they opted out to avoid distracting viewers.
Future plans remain open. Wahlberg mentions considering McCarthy as his son Sean’s nurse, who might catch Danny Reagan’s attention. “Sean didn’t stay in the hospital too long … so Jenny’s definitely game to do something,” he adds.
McCarthy has already bonded with costar Sonequa Martin-Green, who plays detective Lena. “Her and Sonequa Martin-Green have become very close so they’re talking ideas,” Wahlberg notes. “Every time I FaceTime with Jenny, Sonequa says something like, ‘Come on, we need you to have a part on the show. I need you here all the time.’ It makes my heart so happy.”
Family and Celebrity Involvement
Wahlberg highlights interest from his nephews—actors Oscar, Jeffrey, and Brandon—in potential roles. He also leaves the door open for Mark Wahlberg: “Is there a world where I finally twist Mark’s arm to come do an episode? Maybe. It depends on the script but anything’s possible.”
The show’s writers embrace fresh ideas. Wahlberg recounts pitching Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown’s involvement after a call, leading to an immediate scene addition. “That’s the joy right now of working with this group of writers,” he explains.
Background on Boston Blue
Boston Blue centers on Danny Reagan, who transitions from the NYPD to the Boston PD and partners with Lena, the eldest daughter of a prominent law enforcement family. It follows Blue Bloods, which chronicled the Reagan family—from commissioner Frank (Tom Selleck) and his father Henry (Len Cariou) to children Erin (Bridget Moynahan), Danny, and Jamie (Will Estes)—from 2010 to 2024.
The team prioritizes quality cameos. “We can’t just do anything haphazardly at any old given time,” Wahlberg emphasizes. “But they are so game to try things and it’s really just about making sure we’re doing it the right way and making sure we’re giving it the most value for the audience.”
He stresses pacing: “It is also realizing we can take our time and we don’t have to force all these things upon the audience. We can stretch it out and keep surprising them and keep having twists and turns that they didn’t expect.”
Boston Blue airs Fridays at 10 p.m. ET on CBS.
