Dubai International Airport halted flight operations briefly on Saturday after authorities intercepted a drone reportedly launched from Tehran near the runway. Social media videos show smoke billowing from the impact site on the runway of this key global hub for international travel.
Incident Details
A witness reported hearing an explosion above the airport, followed by a thick cloud of smoke. The interception prompted immediate safety measures to protect passengers, staff, and crew.
The Dubai Media Office stated on social media: “For the safety of passengers, airport staff, and airline crew, operations at Dubai International (DXB) have been temporarily suspended.”
Operational Updates
Operations partially resumed later on March 7, with some flights departing from DXB and Dubai World Central–Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC). Travelers received advice to confirm flight status with airlines before heading to the airport, as schedules shifted frequently.
Emirates announced that all flights to and from Dubai remain suspended until further notice. Passengers with bookings from February 28 to March 31 can rebook or request refunds.
Flight tracking data indicates average delays of 60 to 90 minutes, even as some aircraft navigated nearby airspace.
Official Clarification
Initial reports of smoke prompted questions, but authorities clarified no major incident occurred at the airport. A minor event in the city involved falling debris with no reported injuries. Separately, debris from an aerial interception ignited a fire at a berth in Jebel Ali Port.
Regional Context
The episode unfolds amid escalating U.S.-Iran tensions entering their second week, heightening security alerts across West Asia. Dubai International, ranked second globally after Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta, handles massive traffic as a vital tourism and trade gateway.
Recent disruptions include damage to a concourse last week from Iranian strikes on Gulf nations, injuring four staff members after terminals cleared passengers.
