Google TV powers many modern televisions from brands like Hisense, Sony, and TCL, delivering seamless streaming right from the start.
Users seeking a simple, offline setup can activate Basic Mode to transform their smart TV into a traditional ‘dumb TV.’ This option skips Google account sign-ins and internet connections, allowing content from cable boxes, satellite receivers, indoor antennas, or external media players.
Activating Basic Mode During Setup
Basic Mode activates only during the initial TV configuration. For previously configured devices, a factory reset is required first.
Step 1: Factory Reset Your Google TV
A factory reset clears all apps, logins, and custom settings. Access the Settings menu, choose All Settings, navigate to System > About, and select Reset to confirm.
Step 2: Choose Basic Mode
Follow the setup prompts: select your language, then region or country. On the welcome screen, opt for ‘Set up basic TV’ instead of full Google TV setup.
Step 3: Skip Wi-Fi Connection
If prompted for wireless setup, select Skip to ensure no internet access. Complete remaining steps like remote pairing and picture/audio preferences.
Step 4: Use Basic Mode
In Basic Mode, the TV supports only live TV inputs and connected external devices such as streaming players, gaming consoles, or antennas. Prompts for sign-ins may appear for apps or features, but declining keeps it offline.
