Mozilla Responds to User Demand With Granular AI Privacy Settings
Mozilla has unveiled new browser controls that will allow Firefox users to completely disable artificial intelligence features or selectively activate specific tools. The update, scheduled for release on February 24 in Firefox version 148, comes in direct response to growing user concerns about AI integration in web browsers.
Customizable Privacy Protections
Starting with the upcoming release, desktop users will find a dedicated AI controls section within browser settings. This centralized dashboard enables users to either block all AI functionality or enable individual features according to their preferences. A master “Block AI enhancements” toggle will prevent all generative AI operations while simultaneously suppressing related promotional messages.
“We recognize diverse user perspectives regarding AI integration,” stated Firefox product lead Ajit Varma. “These controls empower people to shape their browsing experience while maintaining our commitment to user agency.”
Feature-Specific Management
The control panel allows granular management of five AI-powered functions:
• Automatic browser content translation
• Alternative text generation for PDF images
• Smart tab grouping with AI-generated labels
• Link preview summaries highlighting key content
• Chatbot accessibility through sidebar integrations (including Claude, ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, and Mistral)
Implementation Timeline
The feature set will first appear in Firefox Nightly, the experimental development channel, before expanding to all desktop users later this month. Early adopters are encouraged to provide feedback through Mozilla’s official user engagement platform.
Leadership Commitment to User Control
Mozilla Corporation CEO Anthony Enzor-DeMeo reinforced the organization’s stance on transparent AI implementation: “Every product must prioritize user agency through clear controls. Privacy standards and artificial intelligence applications must remain optional and understandable – these settings will persist through browser updates and can be modified at any time.”
Company representatives confirmed the update will deploy automatically through standard browser update channels, with user-configured preferences maintaining continuity across versions.
