Stepping into the role of He-Man for the upcoming Masters of the Universe film presents immense challenges, particularly in capturing the character’s iconic physique. Star Nicholas Galitzine describes the preparation as the most difficult endeavor of his career.
Building the Iconic Physique
Galitzine highlights the daunting task of embodying He-Man’s legendary build, which surpasses even Arnold Schwarzenegger’s proportions in the animations. “I think anyone seeing that iconic physique would find it extremely daunting,” Galitzine states. “Even the animations put Arnold Schwarzenegger to shame: the proportions, the minuscule waist, the boulder shoulders… I had four or five months to get in shape. Truly, it was the most difficult thing I’ve ever done.”
Director’s Vision for the Role
Director Travis Knight sought an actor who could convey the duality of Prince Adam and He-Man. Adam embodies empathy with a lighthearted, goofy demeanor shaped by his Eternia experiences, while He-Man represents raw strength. Knight explains, “I wasn’t looking for a body. I was looking for a soul. I needed someone who had the spirit of this character, and could be funny and charming and heartbreaking and also plausibly a big action hero. Because there’s a duality there: Adam essentially represents empathy, He-Man represents strength.”
The debut trailer showcases Galitzine’s versatility. On Earth, Adam holds a regular job while tirelessly researching the sword to return home, revealing his perseverance and resourcefulness. His awkward attempt to retrieve the sword from a statue at a comics shop contrasts with his confidence upon arriving on Eternia alongside fellow heroes.
Trailer Highlights and Transformation
Galitzine displays unbridled joy in the Talon Fighter with Teela, evoking nostalgia from past memories. The transformation into He-Man delivers an epic sequence, with his appearance seamlessly matching the cartoon’s stature. Viewers see no disconnect, affirming Knight’s casting decision.
Empowerment Through the Costume
Once donning the armor, Galitzine felt a surge of confidence. “You just become kind of abnormally confident in it,” he shares. “It’s like when you do sex scenes. Everyone else in the room is more uncomfortable than you are, you know? Wandering around in this costume was empowering.”
Masters of the Universe arrives in theaters on June 5.
