Security forces in Jammu and Kashmir have successfully neutralized six improvised explosive device (IED) attacks targeting their convoys since January 1, 2026, preventing major tragedies.
Latest Foiled Attack
The most recent incident occurred overnight on the Srinagar-Baramulla highway in the Azad Gunj Janbazpora area of Baramulla. A dog squad from Indian Army Rashtriya Rifles units detected an IED hidden in a roadside hole, wrapped in polythene bags. This marked the sixth attempt by terrorists to strike daily convoys traveling from Srinagar to Baramulla or Kupwara. Bomb Disposal Squads destroyed the device on-site, avoiding any casualties or damage.
Previous Neutralizations
Authorities have ramped up anti-IED operations amid rising threats. Key successes include:
- On February 18, 2026, forces defused an IED concealed in a briefcase near Narbal on the Srinagar-Baramulla highway.
- February 11 saw the destruction of an IED in Sopore.
- On January 20, 2026, an IED on the Srinagar-Baramulla highway at Takiya Tapper in Pattan was recovered and neutralized.
- January 15 brought the recovery of 3 kilograms of explosives in the forest area of Kakora village, Rajouri district.
- Early on January 4, 2026, Bomb Disposal Squads destroyed 2 kilograms of drone-dropped IEDs in the Line of Control Keran sector.
Terror groups have repeatedly targeted high-traffic routes like the Srinagar-Baramulla highway, hiding IEDs in polythene bags and pressure cookers.
Enhanced Security Measures
Forces have intensified patrolling and area domination along critical stretches, including the Srinagar-Baramulla-Kupwara Highway and the Kashmir-Jammu Highway, to counter the surge in IED placements.
