John Cameron Mitchell, writer, director, and star of Hedwig & the Angry Inch, embarks on a nationwide tour across the United States and Canada to celebrate the film’s 25th anniversary. The tour features a stunning 4K restoration of the 2001 cult classic musical, launching on June 14 in Orlando, Florida.
Tour Highlights and Mitchell’s Involvement
Mitchell joins audiences at each stop, produced by Jeremy Wein for ThisMyShow Presents. He hosts live post-screening conversations, audience Q&A sessions, special acoustic performances, and post-show meet-and-greets.
“When we made the Hedwig film, with the help of hundreds of people, we weren’t surprised when it was initially a flop—just like Rocky Horror, Willy Wonka and The Wizard of Oz,” Mitchell stated. “New things take time. It took word-of-mouth, home video, people passing it one by one to their friends and lovers to get it around the world to the people who needed it. We had no idea it would travel this far. Twenty-five years later, in the face of the current backlash of hate and fear, I’m moved that audiences still see themselves in it—and still want to gather in a room together to experience it.”
Film Background and Legacy
Adapted from the 1998 stage musical by Mitchell and Stephen Trask, Hedwig & the Angry Inch traces the journey of an East German rocker. Hedwig marries an American GI and undergoes a sex change operation to escape to the U.S., only to fall in love with teen musician Tommy, who steals their songs and rises to fame.
The film premiered at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival, securing the Audience Award in the Dramatic category and the Directing Award in the Dramatic category for Mitchell.
