In the Yellowstone spinoff Marshals, which premiered on CBS in March 2026, Kayce Dutton takes on a new career as a U.S. Marshal. Previously known as a livestock agent and commissioner for the Montana Livestock Association, Kayce enforced ranching laws and protected cattle. His experience as a former U.S. Navy SEAL also plays a key role in his latest endeavors.
Kayce’s Transition to U.S. Marshal
The series tracks Kayce as he steps away from ranching to join an elite unit within the U.S. Marshals Service. Drawing on his cowboy expertise and SEAL training, he delivers justice across Montana. Kayce and his team navigate family obligations, professional duties, and the mental strain of serving as the final barrier against regional violence. So far, he has assisted in capturing major societal threats.
Core Responsibilities of a U.S. Marshal
U.S. Marshals handle critical tasks, including apprehending federal fugitives, safeguarding federal judges, transporting prisoners, managing the Witness Security Program, and overseeing assets seized from criminal operations.
Luke Grimes Shares Insights on Marshals
Luke Grimes, who portrays Kayce at age 42, discussed the spinoff concept ahead of its debut. “I’m my own worst critic,” Grimes stated in February 2026. “I was like, ‘If you take a poll of who people want to have a spinoff, I don’t know if Kayce would be top of that list. I think there’s other characters that they would rather see.'”
This skepticism fueled his drive. He added, “So there was a fire under me. Like, it has to be good. If it’s not good, I’d rather not do it. We tried really hard to make sure that any of the original Yellowstone fans would have something to grasp onto.”
Grimes emphasized accessibility for newcomers: “But if you’d never seen Yellowstone, we wanted this show to make sense on its own as well. I think we accomplished that as much as we possibly could.”
Initially uncertain about a solo project, Grimes recalled discussions during the final Yellowstone episodes. “They started bringing it up when we were filming the last few episodes of the original series. There started to be some offers for a spinoff, and I hadn’t gotten one yet, and I was like, ‘I guess that’s it for me.’ And then I got a call and it was like, ‘It’ll be CBS primetime, and it’ll be more of a procedural format.'”
Marshals airs Sundays at 8 p.m. ET on CBS.
