Kelly Rowland highlights the joy romantic comedies bring, even as some overlook their appeal. During a recent virtual interview, the 44-year-old actress discussed her role in the upcoming film ‘Relationship Goals,’ asking co-star Cliff “Method Man” Smith if he agreed on their reflective power.
“I would say so,” Smith, 54, responded.
Plot and Character Dynamics
In the movie, Rowland portrays Leah Caldwell, an ambitious TV producer aiming to become the first woman to lead New York City’s premier morning show. Smith plays Jarrett Roy, her former partner who unexpectedly enters the competition for the same position, creating tension.
“Leah is a very focused, driven woman who is figuring out love,” Rowland explained. “She has her love for her job and her girlfriends, but what’s missing is that one special person to come home to—the person she lost.”
Rowland emphasized Leah’s strength and humanity: “Without spoiling too much, Leah is such a strong character because she is human and has these beautiful flaws. She is still figuring herself and her path out.”
Smith described his character as more layered: “Jarrett is the typical overachiever, a man whose glass is always full. But he doesn’t feel fulfilled.” He noted Jarrett’s commitment issues and how a key book in the story shifts his perspective on personal growth and relationships.
“I think Jarrett’s had a real problem with commitment. It’s this book that puts things into perspective for him—of who he wants to be, who he could be, and who he wants to be with,” Smith said. “I don’t see a better choice than someone of Leah Caldwell’s status. They came up together in the same business, and he sees that she’s his person. The only obstacle? These two are vying for the same job. So it gets complicated.”
Influence of Faith and the Source Material
The film draws from the 2020 book ‘Relationship Goals: How to Win at Dating, Marriage and Sex’ by Pastor Michael Todd, a guide rooted in Christian principles for fostering healthy relationships. It stems from Todd’s popular sermon series and covers topics like dating, intimacy, and marriage. Todd makes a cameo as himself.
This foundation infuses the rom-com with elements of faith, setting it apart. “What I love about the moments that we have with faith in the film is that they are very specific to each character,” Rowland shared. “When people think ‘religion,’ it becomes something else. When you think faith, it truly is a personal walk.”
She praised Todd’s approach: “Michael Todd is so brilliant, allowing people to be human—and have faith play its role. When you add religion, it becomes a little tricky. But when you add faith, it’s something for everybody. Doesn’t matter what religion you are; it’s faith—and it’s for everyone.”
‘Relationship Goals’ begins streaming on Prime Video on February 4.
