Kelvin Fletcher encounters a setback in his latest arable farming attempt on Fletcher’s Family Farm, airing Sunday on ITV.
First Oat Crop Misses the Mark
Kelvin and his wife Liz, who manage a farm in Cheshire, diversify into growing crops after two decades without arable production. They harvest oats hoping to produce porridge and send a trial batch for analysis.
At the mill, Kelvin es excitement: “There’s a lot riding on this… we were bold enough to do it, and even braver to think we could get porridge oats.” He adds that the venture feels nerve-racking yet marks the start of their arable journey, undeterred by results.
Managing Director James inspects the oats and observes, “This is not a promising start.” He attributes the issue to a long, hot, dry summer that prevented sufficient moisture absorption, leaving grains too small for quality porridge groats.
James informs Kelvin: “Unfortunately, it’s not going to make the grade for porridge. But it’s not all lost, because there’s still nutritional value in here.”
Kelvin remains optimistic on camera: “I still feel quite optimistic, a little bit disappointed that we didn’t quite make the grade, but now I’ve got an understanding of what it takes.” He concludes, “We still grew a great crop. I just didn’t quite have the umph.”
Family Celebrates Puppy News
Liz grows emotional during a vet visit when Hugo examines their dog Ginger’s belly and confirms a litter of puppies.
“Hugo, I think that is the best news you’ve ever given me,” Liz declares. Hugo jokes, “Better than the cows?” She responds, “Well, it is a close one, but she is just our baby. Oh my god, you are having pups.”
Season Four Preview
The episode outlines plans to double the flock and herd with new farmhand Josh. Marnie meets her Jacobs sheep, the boys switch tractors for motorbikes, and the family secures approval to rebuild the farmhouse.
