Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Chief Electoral Officer Ratan U Kelkar announces meticulous planning for the upcoming assembly elections to achieve a record voter turnout exceeding 85 percent and ensure a smooth voting experience.
Aiming to Surpass Historical Record
Kelkar shared these plans after launching a one-day training program for District Election Officers. The Election Commission sets a goal to top the previous high of 80.5 percent turnout from the 1987 assembly elections. Polling stations will become more welcoming to turn the ‘festival of democracy’ into a tangible voter experience.
“The target stands at 85 percent, but we plan to exceed it,” Kelkar stated.
Innovative Polling Booths and Inclusivity
Key strategies include model polling booths prioritizing inclusivity and sustainability. These facilities remain clean, free from air and noise pollution, and offer wheelchair-accessible tables along with refreshment areas for voters.
Electoral Roll Finalization and Code Enforcement
Updates to the electoral roll near completion, with more than 15 lakh applications received following the Special Intensive Revision. The Model Code of Conduct activates immediately upon election date announcement, followed by a meeting with political party representatives to promote adherence and collaboration.
Showcasing Electoral Excellence
Kelkar emphasizes demonstrating Kerala’s ability to conduct a world-class, inclusive, and efficient election process. The training equips District Election Officers with tools for uniform implementation across districts, backed by nodal officers from government departments covering nine key thematic areas.
