Liverpool has initiated discussions for a loan agreement to bring in defender Lutsharel Geertruida. The 25-year-old Netherlands international currently plays on a season-long loan at Sunderland from RB Leipzig, but negotiations aim to terminate that arrangement early and secure his transfer to Anfield.
Geertruida’s Versatility and Past Connection
Geertruida offers flexibility across multiple positions, including right-back, center-back, and holding midfielder. Liverpool’s pursuit aligns with their need for defensive reinforcement amid several key absences. He previously worked under Liverpool head coach Arne Slot during three successful seasons at Feyenoord, departing in 2024 to join RB Leipzig.
Liverpool’s Defensive Challenges
The club faces shortages at right-back, with Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong sidelined by injuries. Central defense also lacks depth beyond Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk, exacerbated by the unavailability of Joe Gomez and Giovanni Leoni.
Sunderland supports the potential move, following a similar early return of loanee Marc Guiu to Chelsea earlier this season. Geertruida has featured in 17 Premier League matches for Sunderland, starting seven of them.
