India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has outlined the nation’s approach to Russian oil purchases following the United States’ revocation of a 25% additional tariff, tied to a new bilateral trade agreement framework.
Commitment on Russian Oil Imports
The White House announced that India has pledged to cease direct and indirect imports of Russian oil as part of this framework.
Energy Security as Top Priority
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stressed that diversifying energy sources amid market dynamics and global shifts is essential to meet the needs of 1.4 billion citizens. Energy security ranks as the government’s foremost objective.
“Ensuring energy security for 1.4 billion Indians is our supreme goal, as stated publicly many times,” Jaiswal affirmed.
All energy-related choices revolve around this priority. “Diversifying sources amid market conditions and international changes forms the core of our strategy,” he explained. “All actions, past and future, align with this.”
US-India Trade Framework Highlights
A joint statement from the US and India establishes a framework for an Interim Agreement on mutual trade benefits. The US will levy an 18% reciprocal tariff on select Indian exports, including textiles, apparel, leather products, footwear, plastics, rubber, organic chemicals, home decor, artisanal goods, and specific machinery.
Upon completing the Interim Agreement, the US will eliminate tariffs from Executive Order 14346 on a wide array of items, such as generic pharmaceuticals, gems, diamonds, and aircraft components.
