As U.S. producers scramble to fill a whole bunch of hundreds of open jobs, China is doubling down on its bid to turn into the world’s workshop, and business consultants say the stakes couldn’t be increased.

Ford CEO Jim Farley echoed the priority, warning the U.S. is “in a warfare for manufacturing” as China quickly expands its industrial capability.

“At Ford this morning, we had 6,000 stalls open with no mechanics in them to repair our automobiles.”
