P.E.I. Prepares for Heavy Snow and Strong Winds This Weekend

Residents in central and eastern Prince Edward Island face additional challenging weather starting Sunday evening and continuing through Monday afternoon. Environment Canada has released a special weather statement for Queens and Kings counties, highlighting substantial snowfall and gusty winds.

Expected Impacts in Eastern Regions

The statement indicates that the eastern parts of Kings County may see 10 to 20 centimetres of snow accompanied by northeasterly wind gusts reaching 60 to 80 kilometres per hour. Accumulating snow, combined with intensifying winds and blowing snow, will likely worsen travel conditions beginning Sunday evening. Officials warn of potential power outages in affected areas.

Across the impacted zones, snowfall totals are projected at 10 to 20 centimetres.

Meteorologist’s Outlook

P.E.I. meteorologist Jay Scotland noted that the storm’s current trajectory positions the heaviest effects south and east of the province. Western areas might escape major accumulation, though northeasterly to northerly winds could still generate blowing and drifting snow. “Residents should gear up for hazardous roads and reduced visibility from Sunday night until Monday afternoon,” Scotland advised. Blizzard-like conditions remain a possibility, with wind gusts potentially exceeding 80 km/h during that period.
