Richard Joseph Kociela, affectionately known as Dick, passed away on January 14, 2026, in North Tustin, California, at the age of 88. He succumbed to heart failure associated with Lewy Body Dementia.

Early Life and Career Beginnings

Born on January 11, 1938, in Detroit, Michigan, to Mary Adomovich (Adams) and Joseph Kociela, Dick started his professional journey as a police officer in Detroit. He soon transitioned into the manufacturing sector, becoming one of the city’s youngest Tool and Die Journeymen.

Professional Achievements in Advertising and Beyond

Dick’s passion for automobiles guided him into the advertising industry, where he built a distinguished 40-year career. He collaborated with prominent agencies such as Young & Rubicam, Ross Roy (now known as BBDO), and Beaumont-Bennett. Later, he co-founded The Herdeg-Kociela Group alongside his wife, Erin, and contributed his expertise at The Designory in Long Beach. At the age of 70, Dick ventured into real estate with Erin, continuing until his retirement in 2023.

Family and Legacy

Dick is survived by his devoted wife, Erin Herdeg-Kociela; his children, Lee Kociela, Robbie Kociela Olson, Liz Ahrens, Jim Kociela, Joe Kociela, and Chris Ray; as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Peggy Pucci.

Personal Interests and Community Involvement

An enthusiastic supporter of the Detroit Lions, Dick relished watching games with fellow enthusiasts at the Santa Ana Elks Lodge. He also found joy in maintaining his yard, tackling crossword puzzles, and cherishing moments with his dogs, Ford and Millie.

Memorial Services

A Memorial Mass will take place at La Purisima Catholic Church in Orange on Wednesday, February 4, at 11:00 a.m., followed by a Celebration of Life at the Santa Ana Elks Lodge. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Lewy Body Dementia Association at lbda.org/donate/.
