New Legal Developments in Lansdowne Investigation
Daniel Martell, the stepfather of two young children who vanished from rural Nova Scotia nearly nine months ago, is facing several criminal charges involving an adult victim. Authorities confirmed that the 34-year-old was arrested on Monday and has been charged with sexual assault, assault, and forcible confinement. Martell is scheduled to appear in Pictou Provincial Court on March 2 to address these allegations.
At the time of the children’s disappearance, Martell was living in Lansdowne, N.S., with the children and their mother, Malehya Brooks-Murray. While these new charges involve an adult, the arrest has brought renewed attention to the ongoing search for the siblings.
The Disappearance of Lilly and Jack Sullivan
Lilly Sullivan, 6, and her brother Jack Sullivan, 5, were reported missing on May 2, 2025. Their mother contacted emergency services after the children allegedly wandered away from their family home in a sparsely populated area about 140 kilometers northeast of Halifax. The initial report sparked a massive search and rescue operation in the dense, rugged woods surrounding the property.
Despite an exhaustive grid search, investigators found very few clues. The only physical evidence recovered during the early stages of the investigation was a pink blanket and a single child-sized boot print. Since then, the search has expanded into a complex multi-provincial investigation.
Status of the Missing Persons Investigation
Over the last eight months, law enforcement agencies have utilized specialized resources, including cadaver dogs and behavioral science units. The investigation has been vast in scope, involving:
- More than 75 formal interviews and several polygraph examinations.
- The review of over 1,000 community tips.
- The analysis of 8,000 video files.
- The execution of 12 search warrants between May and July 2025.
While the case has generated significant public speculation and online debate, investigators have maintained a cautious approach regarding the family. Major crime officials stated earlier this month that no family members have been officially named as suspects in the disappearance. Authorities continue to emphasize that they are following the evidence and gathering information to determine exactly what happened to the Sullivan children on that May afternoon.
Allegations of Past Domestic Conflict
Recently unsealed court documents have provided a glimpse into the family dynamic prior to the children vanishing. In statements provided to police, Brooks-Murray alleged that the relationship with Martell had been marked by instances of physical domestic conflict and control. Martell has denied these allegations, claiming they are part of a false narrative.
As the legal proceedings against Martell move forward in March, the primary focus for the community and investigators remains the whereabouts of Lilly and Jack Sullivan. The case remains one of the most intensive missing persons investigations in the region’s history.
