SAN FRANCISCO — Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry underwent an MRI on his right knee and remains day-to-day, the team announced Saturday. The scan detected patellofemoral syndrome, commonly referred to as runner’s knee, a condition involving inflammation around the kneecap. Medical experts describe it as non-serious, often managed with rest and treatment.
Curry’s Recent Injury Timeline
Curry exited Friday’s loss to the Detroit Pistons in the late third quarter due to ongoing knee discomfort and did not return. He first noticed the issue before Sunday’s victory against the Minnesota Timberwolves but pushed through the pain. Curry missed last Monday’s defeat to the Timberwolves because of similar soreness.
Averaging 27.3 points per game this season, Curry scored 23 points in 25 minutes during the Pistons matchup. His availability for Tuesday’s contest against the Philadelphia 76ers remains uncertain as the team prioritizes his recovery.
Coaching Strategy for Load Management
Warriors head coach Steve Kerr revealed ongoing discussions with the training staff about optimizing Curry’s minutes in the season’s second half to allow adequate knee rest. Kerr emphasized the challenge of balancing competitive play with long-term health preservation.
“You have to do both,” Kerr stated. “That’s the job, right. That’s our job as a staff, as a team, mix and match lineups. You have to include the performance staff in all these conversations. Rick [Celebrini, Warriors director of sports medicine and performance] and I had this exact conversation today. Everything changes daily. We’re constantly talking with Steph, checking in with him, seeing how he’s feeling.”
Kerr highlighted the need for close monitoring, especially approaching the All-Star break. “The knee [Saturday] night is the same thing that kept him out of the Minnesota game last week, and I would imagine it’s something that we have to really monitor here, especially before the All-Star break. Where we got to see if he can take on his usual workload or does he need to miss a game here or there? That’s something we all have to figure out.”
Updates on Other Warriors Players
Forward Jonathan Kuminga shows improvement while recovering from a knee bone bruise. He has been sidelined since injuring himself in a January 22 loss to the Dallas Mavericks, amid recent trade rumors. Kerr noted positive developments after Kuminga’s post-game check-in Friday and a workout session Saturday.
“I asked him [Friday] night after the game, he said he was feeling better. He got a workout in today before our practice. He’s improving. He’s getting closer to being able to play. I don’t know what his status will be for Tuesday.”
The Tuesday matchup represents the Warriors’ final game before the February 5 trade deadline.
Additionally, guard Seth Curry progresses well in rehabilitating from sciatica. Absent since a December 4 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers, Seth has begun on-court activities and faces re-evaluation in two weeks, according to team updates.
