Pete Alonso is probably going dealing with a special type of free company this time as he prepares to decide out of his contract.
The Mets performed hardball with the star first baseman final winter — basically difficult Alonso to show his worthiness of a long-term deal — and he responded.
It was a season that resulted in disappointment for the membership, one victory in need of the playoffs to finish a second-half nosedive. However from a private standpoint, the season ranked amongst Alonso’s most interesting: a .272/.347/.524 slash line with 38 homers and 126 RBIs.
After negotiations final offseason that crew proprietor Steve Cohen termed “exhausting,” Alonso returned on a two-year contract value $54 million that features an opt-out after the World Sequence concludes. Alonso has already stated he intends to train that opt-out.
