Tsunami warnings have been issued across the Pacific Ocean after a magnitude-8.7 earthquake struck off the coast of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula within the late morning native time on July 30.

The earthquake stands out as the eighth largest on document globally, seismologist Alice-Agnes Gabriel of the Scripps Establishment of Oceanography, wrote on Bluesky. The earthquake occurred in a subduction zone on the Kuril-Kamchatka Arc, the place the Pacific plate is being subducted underneath the Okhotsk plate.
