Leaders Hail “Historic” Trade Agreement Between Nations

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed appreciation for the United States’ decision to significantly reduce tariffs on Indian exports following a pivotal trade agreement confirmed on Monday. The revised terms lower import duties on Indian products from 50% to 18%, marking a breakthrough in bilateral negotiations.

Mutual Benefits for Major Economies

During a phone conversation with President Donald Trump, Modi emphasized how the agreement demonstrates the advantages of cooperation between “two large economies and the world’s largest democracies.” The Prime Minister stated: “Made in India products will now have a reduced tariff of 18%. This creates vast new opportunities for our people and unlocks immense potential for mutually beneficial cooperation.”

Leadership Commended Amid Global Challenges

Modi publicly acknowledged Trump’s international influence, remarking: “The President’s leadership remains vital for global peace, stability, and prosperity. India fully supports peace efforts worldwide.” He confirmed both leaders plan to elevate bilateral relations to “unprecedented heights” through continued collaboration.

Tariff Details and Geopolitical Implications

The White House confirmed the immediate implementation of reduced reciprocal tariffs, with import duties on Indian goods dropping from previous cumulative rates of 50% (including 25% on oil) to a flat 18% rate. Diplomatic sources indicate these tariffs had previously stalled negotiations, particularly regarding India’s energy imports.

Diverging Statements on Energy Provisions

While Trump asserted India agreed to “stop buying Russian oil” and increase American imports, official statements from New Delhi didn’t confirm these claims. The President suggested the energy component would help resolve the Ukraine conflict, stating: “This will help end the war where thousands perish weekly.”

Indian Ambassador to the US Vinay Mohan Kwatra characterized the agreement as a “big win” signaling an “exciting new phase” in bilateral relations. Meanwhile, US officials confirmed the tariff reduction without detailing any immediate changes to India’s energy procurement policies.
