Scientists at Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) have unveiled a innovative water-soluble hologram label designed for secure food packaging and cosmetics. This smart technology dissolves instantly in water, revealing tampering attempts through visible color and hologram changes.

Advanced Metasurface Technology

The label employs metasurface innovation, which manipulates light waves using nanoscale structures for vivid colors and dynamic hologram effects. Professor Yeon Gu-jin and his team integrated 4-6 nanometer titanium dioxide nanoparticles into hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC), a safe material commonly found in medicines, lip balms, skincare creams, and food thickeners.

Analysis confirms that these nanoparticles densely embed within the HPC matrix, enabling precise light control. Upon water exposure, the internal structure disrupts, intensifying colors and altering hologram images for easy naked-eye detection.

Secure Applications Across Industries

In food packaging, the hologram responds to tampering by changing appearance when packages open, even under high humidity or temperature fluctuations common in logistics. Unlike traditional methods requiring complex equipment, this solution uses nanoimprint lithography on plastic films for cost-effective, high-volume production.

The technology extends to cosmetics packaging, freshness monitoring for perishables, and unified tracking systems for medicines and consumer goods. Professor Yeon Gu-jin stated, “Commercializing this innovation enables applications in diverse areas, including food and drug monitoring via lipsticks and eye creams, nameplates, and advanced smart packaging systems.”

Publication and Impact

The research appears in Advanced Photonics (2026), DOI: 10.1117/1.AP.8.1.016007. This development promises enhanced security without compromising safety or aesthetics in everyday products.
