The White House has justified its temporary approval for India to accept shipments of Russian crude oil, pointing to global supply disruptions from West Asia tensions.
Reasons for the Decision
Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt explained that President Donald Trump and the U.S. Treasury Department authorized the measure. She highlighted India’s prior cooperation with sanctions, including a pause on purchases of restricted Russian oil. Leavitt added that the cargo en route to India was already dispatched and would provide minimal financial gain to Russia.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed the waiver aims to steady global oil markets amid the ongoing crisis.
India’s Position
India’s Press Information Bureau emphasized that oil import decisions prioritize national interests and availability. Officials stressed that no foreign government approval is needed for such purchases.
