Union Minister of Jal Shakti, CR Patil, inaugurated Jal Mahotsav 2026, a nationwide campaign promoting community involvement in rural drinking water management and water conservation, from Village Rahej in Gujarat’s Navsari district on International Women’s Day. The launch coincides with Jal Arpan Diwas, which hands over drinking water assets to Gram Panchayats to boost community ownership under the Jal Jeevan Mission. Observed as “Sujalam Shakti Diwas,” the event marks the start of activities across states.
Launch Highlights in Gujarat
Village women, Gram Panchayat officials, and students welcomed Minister Patil. He toured exhibition stalls on Jal Jeevan Mission initiatives and engaged with women using Field Testing Kits (FTKs) for water quality checks. Jal Arpan ceremonies formally transferred water supply schemes to Gram Panchayats and Village Water and Sanitation Committees (VWSCs). Symbolic Jal Bandhan rituals at water sites reinforced community commitments to maintenance.
Minister Patil congratulated women on International Women’s Day, praising their leadership in water governance. He noted the impact of Swachh Bharat Mission and Jal Jeevan Mission on rural health and dignity, with over 24 lakh women testing water via FTKs. He urged rainwater harvesting, groundwater recharge, and participation in Jal Mahotsav under the tagline “Gaon ka Utsav, Desh ka Mahotsav.”
Ishvarsingh Patel, Gujarat’s Minister of State for Narmada Water Resources, and Nareshbhai Patel, Minister for Tribal Development, also spoke. A Kalash Poojan honored water, followed by a film on women’s roles in Jal Jeevan Mission. Community contributors like SHG members and pump operators received recognition, ending with a Jal Sankalp pledge.
Simultaneous Events in Maharashtra and Bihar
In Maharashtra’s Sindhudurg district, Minister of State V Somanna joined Jal Mahotsav in Karli village, featuring Jal Walk, Jal Pujan, water testing demos, and recognitions. He drank tap water on-site, praising its quality under Jal Jeevan Mission, and called for rainwater harvesting. Local leaders Nitesh Rane and Deepak Kesarkar attended.
In Bihar’s Muzaffarpur district, Minister of State Raj Bhushan Choudhary participated in Jal Chaupal, Jal Bandhan, and recognitions. He highlighted women’s roles, the campaign’s focus on participation via Gram Panchayats, and Jal Jeevan Mission’s benefits in reducing women’s water-fetching burdens.
Nationwide Campaign Details
Running from March 8 to 22 annually, Jal Mahotsav strengthens Jan Bhagidari at village levels for sustainable water management. Activities include rallies, dialogues, FTK demos, pledges, and volunteer honors across villages, districts, and states.
Four-Tier Strategy
The campaign operates at national, state, district, and Gram Panchayat levels. Nationally, a mega event on March 11 at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, with President Droupadi Murmu, honors grassroots leaders. It culminates on World Water Day with Jal Arpan ceremonies.
States host capacity building, missions meetings, and calendars like Rajya Jal Utsav. Districts focus on protocols and improvement plans. Gram Panchayats drive Har Ghar Jal declarations, VWSC orientations, and asset branding, fostering Sujal Gram vision for rural India.
