Kamila Valieva’s Triumphant Return to the Ice
Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva marked her comeback to competitive skating on Saturday, executing a stunning quadruple jump almost four years after a doping scandal disrupted her Olympic dreams. The 19-year-old dazzled spectators during the quarterfinals of the Russian jumping championships in Moscow, landing a quadruple toeloop to open her routine amid enthusiastic applause from the crowd.
Valieva advanced to Sunday’s semifinals and secured sixth place in a separate “duets” jump competition. This nationally broadcast event focused solely on jumps, awarding points based on technical execution rather than a full program.
Olympic Ineligibility and Emerging Rivals
Despite her strong showing, Valieva remains ineligible for the upcoming Milan Cortina Olympics. Another Russian athlete, Adeliia Petrosian, emerges as a strong candidate for women’s gold as an Individual Neutral Athlete.
Recap of the 2022 Beijing Doping Controversy
Valieva’s career faced turmoil at the 2022 Beijing Olympics when she was just 15. A sample collected two months before the Games tested positive for the banned substance trimetazidine, surfacing after she helped secure team gold for Russia. Authorities later disqualified her from the team event, elevating the United States to the top spot.
In the women’s individual competition, Valieva finished fourth despite entering as a favorite. Her performance drew sharp criticism from coach Eteri Tutberidze at the rinkside. Legal challenges to overturn the disqualification extended through the Swiss supreme court but ultimately failed. Valieva’s ban concluded in December, clearing the path for her return.
Post-Olympics reforms raised the minimum age for Olympic skaters to 17, aligning with preparations for Milan Cortina.
Another Olympic Medalist’s Comeback
Saturday also saw the return of Alexandra Ignatova, formerly known as Alexandra Trusova, who claimed silver at the 2022 Olympics. Competing for the first time since giving birth last year, Ignatova fell short of semifinals qualification.
