José Hernández, the pioneering migrant farm worker who became the first of his background to journey into space, spoke at a California school on Thursday to encourage literacy among young students. The event, organized by the San Benito County Office of Education, highlighted his remarkable path from the fields to the stars.
From Farm Fields to NASA’s Orbit
Hernández served as an engineer aboard the Space Shuttle mission STS-128 in 2009, orbiting Earth and conducting vital research. He credits his second-grade teacher for igniting his passion for learning, which propelled him toward a degree in engineering and a career as a researcher in cutting-edge technologies. Despite facing rejection from NASA 11 times, Hernández persisted and ultimately earned his spot in the astronaut program.
Reflecting on his time in space, Hernández described the experience vividly: “To go out into space and then go around the world once every 90 minutes in a continuous fashion, that’s amazing. You never get tired of floating in space.”
Inspiring Future Dreamers
During his school visit, Hernández focused on motivating the next generation. He shared his core mission: “That’s my whole purpose, to empower kids to believe in that what they think is impossible to accomplish is actually not impossible.” His story of perseverance serves as a beacon for students facing their own challenges.
Hernández’s life story also inspired the biopic A Million Miles Away, which chronicles his determination through repeated setbacks to fulfill his dream of space travel.
