President Donald Trump announced that U.S. Central Command carried out a major bombing raid on Kharg Island, a vital oil export hub in the Persian Gulf off Iran’s southern coast.
Strategic Role of Kharg Island
Kharg Island serves as one of Iran’s primary oil terminals, handling a significant portion of the country’s crude exports. This infrastructure plays a central role in Iran’s energy trade and economy, making it a highly sensitive asset.
Trump’s Statement on the Strike
In a post on Truth Social, Trump described the operation as follows: “Moments ago, at my direction, the United States Central Command executed one of the most powerful bombing raids in the history of the Middle East, and totally obliterated every MILITARY target in Iran’s crown jewel, Kharg Island.”
He further emphasized U.S. military capabilities, stating: “Our Weapons are the most powerful and sophisticated that the World has ever known but, for reasons of decency, I have chosen NOT to wipe out the Oil Infrastructure on the Island. However, should Iran, or anyone else, do anything to interfere with the Free and Safe Passage of Ships through the Strait of Hormuz, I will immediately reconsider this decision.”
The announcement highlights ongoing tensions in the region, particularly concerning maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.
