The recently finalized Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and the European Union represents a pivotal advancement in India’s international economic strategy. Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal described the pact as evidence that India has secured a prominent seat among the world’s leading geopolitical players.
Unlocking Opportunities for Indian Businesses
Goyal emphasized that the agreement opens up vast new markets for Indian exporters while safeguarding the interests of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). He noted that it reinforces India’s reputation as a reliable partner on the global stage. The minister pointed out how India’s robust workforce and manufacturing capabilities align seamlessly with Europe’s cutting-edge technologies, fostering mutual growth and innovation.
Addressing Political Critiques
In response to opposition figures from the Congress party who labeled the deal as exaggerated in its significance, Goyal countered by highlighting what he sees as inconsistencies in their stance. He recalled that negotiations with the EU were initiated during the previous United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government but were ultimately stalled. Goyal contrasted this with the current administration’s assertive approach, attributing India’s present-day boldness to a departure from earlier uncertainties.
