Private bus operators in Karnataka announce a 20% hike in ticket prices, driven by escalating diesel costs and rising operational expenses. The new rates take effect from midnight tonight, as stated by Nataraj Sharma, president of the Private Bus Owners’ Association. This change affects thousands of intercity and long-distance travelers statewide.
Rising Diesel Costs Drive Fare Adjustment
Operators highlight the ongoing surge in diesel prices, which has inflated expenses for fuel, vehicle maintenance, driver wages, and other daily operations. These pressures make the fare increase essential for sustainability.
Key Routes See Significant Price Jumps
The adjustment applies to major routes throughout Karnataka. For example, Bengaluru to Mangaluru tickets climb from ₹1,000 to ₹1,200. Bengaluru to Bagalkote fares, previously ₹800, now stand at ₹1,000. On the Bengaluru to Kalaburagi route, prices shift from ₹1,200 to between ₹1,400 and ₹1,500.
Impact on Daily Commuters and Travelers
Travelers, including regular commuters and those on long journeys, face higher costs starting immediately. Private buses remain a primary option for many, amplifying the financial strain.
Potential for Additional Fare Revisions
Sources within the association warn that continued fuel price volatility could prompt further fare changes in the near future.
