Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior stands by the three players substituted at halftime during the team’s 3-2 comeback victory over West Ham at Stamford Bridge. While the win highlights the squad’s relience, the first-half struggles prompt concerns about overall depth.

Halftime Changes and Squad Depth Questions

The opening 45 minutes proved dismal, forcing Rosenior to make three tactical substitutions to turn the tide. Benoit Badiashile, Jorrel Hato, and Alejandro Garnacho started the match, but Wesley Fofana, Marc Cucurella, and Joao Pedro entered after the break, despite needing recovery time themselves. This move underscores potential vulnerabilities in Chelsea’s bench strength.

Rosenior’s Post-Match Inghts

Rosenior avoids ngling out the trio, emphazing team-wide issues. “I’m learning about this group very quickly. I’ve been here three and a half weeks, we’ve played seven games,” he states. “I’ve said I’m going to give them all a chance. Hato’s an outstanding player, Badiashile’s an outstanding player, so’s Garnacho.”

He adds that the problem lay in collective functionality rather than individual errors. “It wasn’t about them individually but our functionality in the first half wasn’t there,” Rosenior explains. “You can see the fight, energy, and spirit in the group, which they all have. To come back, like we did in Napoli, shows me a lot of really potive things.”

Collective Responbility in Press Conference

In his post-match remarks, Rosenior reinforces the shared accountability. “Being honest, individually and collectively, the first half was nowhere near the level it needed to be,” he admits. “The individuals came off, and people will look at that, but it was a collective poor performance in the first half.”

The coach describes the first half as lethargic but praises the second for delivering the intenty he demands. “It was lethargic in the first half but the second half was everything I wanted to see,” Rosenior concludes.
