Trump Announces Shift in India’s Oil Purchases

US President Donald Trump announced that India plans to buy Venezuelan oil instead of Iranian crude. He also indicated that China could negotiate a deal with the United States to acquire Venezuelan supplies. During a conversation with reporters aboard Air Force One en route from Washington to Florida, Trump stated, “We’ve already made that deal — the concept of the deal.” He further noted, “China is welcome to come in and make a great deal on oil.”

Venezuela Reforms Oil Sector for Foreign Investment

Venezuelan lawmakers enacted legislation last month to simplify foreign companies’ involvement in the nation’s oil industry. This step addresses demands from the Trump administration. Acting President Delcy Rodríguez backed the measure, which liberalizes the oil sector dominated by state-owned Petróleos de Venezuela (PDVSA). The changes permit foreign firms to operate oilfields independently, bearing their own risks and expenses.

Following the US capture of President Nicolás Maduro in early January, Washington has signaled its goal to encourage American companies to invest in Venezuela’s oil resources. Venezuela holds the world’s largest proven oil reserves, and Rodríguez emphasized that the new law will optimize revenue from these assets. Addressing supporters during the reform’s celebration, she remarked, “This law allows us to make a true historic qualitative leap to turn those oil reserves, the largest on the planet, into the greatest happiness a people can have, with the Venezuelan people as the rightful owners of that happiness.”

Boost to Energy Production and Foreign Expertise

Jorge Rodríguez, National Assembly leader and brother of the acting president, explained that the reforms will “boost the energy sector, promoting oil production in undeveloped fields.” The policy removes longstanding barriers to foreign engagement, aiming to attract investment and technical know-how to increase output.
