The New York Islanders delivered a strong opening but faltered in a sloppy performance, falling 4-3 to the Nashville Predators at UBS Arena. Roman Josi’s goal with 1:45 remaining ended the Islanders’ three-game winning streak, despite standout efforts from goaltender Ilya Sorokin.

Early Promise Fades

The Islanders jumped ahead quickly, with Mat Barzal scoring just 89 seconds into the game. He batted a rebound from Anthony Duclair out of the air, sending the puck off the post, off Juuse Saros, and into the net for a 1-0 lead. Momentum built as Matthew Schaefer added his 15th goal of the season, firing a shot from the left circle to make it 2-0 after dominating shifts.

Nashville fought back in the first period. Filip Forsberg cut the deficit to 2-1 on a power-play goal at 9:59. Minutes later, Matthew Wood capitalized on a turnover by Schaefer behind the net, tying the score with a one-timer.

Second Period Struggles

Jean-Gabriel Pageau regained the lead for New York at 7:21 of the second, scoring off the rush to put the Islanders up 3-2. However, Forsberg’s second goal—a shot from the left post that trickled over the line—tied it again. Sorokin shone in the period, stopping 22 shots, including a key save on Michael Bunting, but defensive lapses left him exposed.

Puck management issues plagued the Islanders, with turnovers from Schaefer and Scott Mayfield leading to Nashville’s chances. Tony DeAngelo captured the frustration during the second period, telling the team’s radio broadcast, “We’re horrible tonight. This is a really bad game for us.” Pageau’s line faced heavy pressure, while Barzal’s line, featuring Max Shabanov instead of the ill Jonathan Drouin, started strong but unraveled.

Third Period Heartbreaker

The score remained 3-3 entering the third, but New York improved slightly, avoiding the chance bleed from the previous frame. Tony DeAngelo appeared to break the tie 1:10 in, but officials waved off the goal for goaltender interference. The Islanders challenged, arguing Anthony Duclair avoided the crease, but the call stood.

Sloppiness persisted, highlighted by Ryan Pulock’s offside error during four-on-four play while crossing the blue line. Moments later, Josi beat Sorokin with a sharp shot, securing a 4-3 win for Nashville. The Predators held on to claim victory.

Bo Horvat delivered his strongest performance since returning from injury, threading high-danger passes that went unrewarded. Ondrej Palat showed quick chemistry with Horvat and Heineman. Yet, the Islanders’ reliance on Sorokin underscores ongoing concerns, even as they escape defeat more often than not.
