James Christopher Layton, affectionately known as “Pappy” and a prominent figure in the water treatment sector, passed away in 2026 at the age of 82. Born on February 4, 1944, to Glenn and Mary Layton, he dedicated much of his life to Southern California communities.

Early Life and Education

Layton grew up in the region and completed his high school education at Mater Dei High School, graduating in 1962. His formative years shaped a strong commitment to family and professional excellence that defined his later achievements.

Professional Career

Early in his career, Layton pursued opportunities in sales before transitioning to the family-owned Layton Soft Water, Inc. He rose to the position of president, steering the company through significant growth. Following the business’s sale, he provided consulting services in the water industry until 2011. That year, he took on special projects at Hall’s Culligan, continuing to contribute his expertise until retirement.

Family Legacy

In 1963, Layton married Maureen Crowley, with whom he raised five children until her death in 2006. He later wed Wendy Smith (Wigle) in 2010. Layton was predeceased by his sons, Matthew and Bryant. He leaves behind his wife, Wendy; daughters Amy Walker (Joe), Kristi Pihl (Steve), and Megan Layton; as well as a large extended family including numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Memorial Services

A Funeral Mass is scheduled for Friday, February 6, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Family Cathedral in Orange. Interment will follow at Santa Ana Cemetery. In place of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Water Quality Research Foundation or the Mater Dei High School Ring of Honor to honor his memory.
