Heated Debate in Lok Sabha Over Military Memoir Reference

The Budget Session of Parliament witnessed intense exchanges on Monday as Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi cited excerpts from a magazine article referencing unpublished memoirs of former Army Chief General MM Naravane. The incident prompted immediate objections from treasury benches, escalating into prolonged arguments about parliamentary procedure.

Opposition Questions Government’s Resistance

Rahul Gandhi challenged the government’s opposition to his remarks during the motion of thanks on the President’s Address, asking: “What does it contain that is scaring them so much? If they’re not scared, I should be allowed to continue.” The Congress leader maintained his right to reference published material, emphasizing the article’s verifiable sourcing.

Supporting Gandhi’s position, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra stated: “This excerpt comes from a published book with authenticated sourcing. If there’s no issue with the content, why prevent its discussion in Parliament?”

Governing Party Counters Opposition Claims

BJP MP Dilip Saikia strongly rebutted the opposition’s arguments, asserting: “The Leader of Opposition is attempting to mislead the nation and create unnecessary confusion. These remarks unrelated to the President’s address undermine military morale and question national security.”

Parliamentary proceedings saw multiple interruptions as Speaker Om Birla attempted to maintain order, reminding members about rules concerning the citation of unpublished materials during official debates. The controversy overshadowed scheduled discussions on the President’s Address to both Houses of Parliament.
