Seven Crew Members Identified in Maritime Tragedy
The U.S. Coast Guard has officially identified all seven individuals aboard the Gloucester-based fishing vessel Lily Jean that sank last Friday morning. The crew members presumed lost at sea include Paul Beal Sr., Paul Beal Jr., John Rousanidis, Freeman Short, and Sean Therrien.
Search Operations Concluded
Search teams previously recovered the body of Captain Accursio “Gus” Sanfilippo during initial response efforts. Federal fisheries observer Jada Samitt was also confirmed among the victims, with her family acknowledging her passing in a weekend statement.
Officials confirmed in a statement that a district-level formal investigation has been initiated into the vessel’s sinking and the resultant fatalities. “This tragedy will undergo thorough examination to determine causal factors,” the statement read.
Timeline of the Incident
The vessel’s emergency beacon activated early Friday, signaling potential distress. Responders arriving at the last known location discovered debris fields and Captain Sanfilippo’s remains. Search operations continued for 24 hours before being suspended when authorities determined “all reasonable efforts to locate survivors had been exhausted.”
NOAA Observer Among Casualties
Samitt served as a federal fisheries observer under the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration program, which places personnel aboard commercial vessels to monitor compliance with fishing regulations.
The incident remains under active investigation while waterfront communities gather at memorial sites including Gloucester Fisherman’s Memorial to honor the lost crew.
