High-Speed Rail Corridor Nears Operational Phase

Construction on ‘s first bullet train project has reached a decisive phase, with latest reports indicating 56% physical completion of the 508-kilometer Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed corridor. Government monitoring data shows rapid progress on the infrastructure initiative, which recently crossed the halfway construction milestone.

Project Timeline and Financial Investment

Officials confirm approximately $10.2 billion has been invested in the project to date, with total estimated costs projected at $13 billion upon completion. The corridor is scheduled to become fully operational by December 2029.

Phased Operational Plan

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated: ‘Initial operations will commence in August 2027 with a 100-kilometer demonstration run between Surat and Vapi. Subsequent phases will connect Vapi to Ahmedabad and Thane to Ahmedabad before full corridor operations begin.’

Service Specifications

The high-speed trains will operate at maximum speeds of 320 km/h, significantly reducing travel time between the two major cities:

  • Non-stop service covering 508 km in 1 hour 58 minutes
  • 12-stop service completing the journey in 2 hours 17 minutes
  • 4-stop express service maintaining the 1 hour 58 minute schedule

Infrastructure Monitoring

The project ranks among the nation’s most closely monitored infrastructure developments, with regular progress assessments conducted through government oversight portals. Current projections suggest the corridor will enter full revenue service following comprehensive testing phases in late 2029.
