Bats in Newfoundland and Labrador face a dire threat from a deadly disease decimating their populations. Scientists race to study these creatures before their numbers dwindle further.
The Vital Role of Bats in the Ecosystem
Despite common fears, bats play a crucial role in maintaining environmental balance. Wildlife scientist Jessica Humber with the provincial government emphasizes their value in insect control.
“They can easily eat half of their body weight in insects each night. And pregnant females can eat their full body weight in insects each night,” Humber explains. “So, for a lot of the pests that impact our agricultural sector and forestry sector, they are excellent natural controls of outbreaks of those insect species.”
Challenges in Observing Nocturnal Bats
Bats’ nocturnal habits make them elusive, complicating efforts to monitor them. Researchers visit sites like Salmonier Nature Park, where small wooden bat houses shelter the mammals during the day.
Teams capture bats, weigh them, and attach tracking devices to gather essential data. As dusk falls, bats emerge in a dramatic swarm, offering a rare glimpse into their world.
