Prince Edward Island residents rally with donations as the P.E.I. Humane Society cares for 43 dogs seized from a local home on February 5. The influx strains the shelter’s current limited space, even as a new facility nears completion. An investigation continues, with no fines or charges issued yet.
Community Steps Up with Essential Supplies
Ashley Travis, the society’s development and communications co-ordinator, reports an outpouring of support. Islanders reach out daily to offer help, delivering waves of cleaning supplies and pet food. Volunteers and foster families step in to manage the workload, allowing staff to maintain regular operations.
“Our phones are going crazy. We’re all becoming masters of multitasking,” Travis said. “It’s been incredible to see such an outpouring of support from animal lovers across the province.”
Top Items Needed for Kennel Care
The shelter’s Facebook page details priority donations. Newspapers top the list, as staff line kennels with them to speed cleaning for large groups of dogs.
“Right now, the No. 1 thing we need are newspapers,” Travis emphasized. Paper towels, large bottles of name-brand dish soap, and disinfectants like Mr. Clean or Pine-Sol also prove invaluable for daily tasks.
“Those large bottles of name-brand dish soap are always really great for us because we can use them for various different things,” she added.
Partnerships Ensure Steady Food Supply
Collaborations bolster resources. The society partners with Global Pet Foods, while Blue Ribbon Pet Supply hosts a fundraiser. Staff redistribute incoming packages swiftly to meet demands.
“We’re distributing food, we’re distributing medications, we’re distributing supplies. As quick as a package is coming in, we’re redistributing it,” Travis said.
Travis praises the island’s generosity: “Anyone who’s ever been in need on Prince Edward Island will tell you that Islanders are some of the most generous people you will ever meet. We are seeing that live every single day.”
