Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi sharply criticized the Indian government’s interim trade agreement with the United States, accusing it of compromising national interests and effectively “selling Bharat Mata.”

Global Turbulence and Energy Security Concerns

During his address in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi highlighted the government’s own acknowledgment of global challenges, including the decline of the unipolar world order, escalating geopolitical conflicts, and the weaponization of energy and finance.

Despite these risks, he charged that the government permitted the US to manipulate energy and financial systems to India’s detriment. “When America dictates that we cannot purchase oil from a specific country, it undermines our energy security,” Gandhi stated. “You admit we face a global storm, yet you allow this weaponization. Are you not ashamed? You have compromised India’s interests—have you no shame in selling ‘Bharat Mata’?”

Allegations Against Prime Minister Modi

Gandhi turned his criticism toward Prime Minister Narendra Modi, asserting that the leader would not betray India under normal conditions but faces external pressures. “They are choking him with a grip on his neck,” Gandhi claimed. “Fear is visible in the Prime Minister’s eyes. First, consider Epstein—3 million files remain sealed.”

Tariff Hikes and Import Surges

Gandhi pointed to sharp rises in tariffs, with average rates jumping from around 3% to 18%—a sixfold increase. He warned that US imports to India could balloon from $46 billion to $146 billion annually, adding nearly $100 billion without guaranteed reciprocal benefits from the US.

“This is absurd,” Gandhi described the deal, emphasizing the lack of firm commitments in return.
