Ulsan District Court has fined a man in his 60s 5 million won for embezzling a lost debit card to purchase drinks and essentials totaling 650,000 won.

Court Details the Case

Judge Park Kang-min, presiding over the single-judge criminal bench, delivered the sentence on the 20th. The defendant, identified as A, faces charges of embezzling a low-value lost item.

In September, A discovered a debit card abandoned at a convenience store in Yangsan, South Gyeongsang Province. After unsuccessful attempts to locate the owner, he proceeded to a large supermarket in Busan. There, he made eight separate purchases of beverages, daily necessities, and similar items, charging a total of 650,000 won to the card.

Sentencing Factors

The court highlighted the defendant’s history, noting, “The defendant served time for fraud, was released, and committed another offense during his probation period.”

Despite this, mitigating factors influenced the fine. The bench explained, “The damage amount was not substantial, and the defendant’s health condition was taken into account.”
