“Bernadette, The Musical” brings a rare faith-centered production to Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood at the Athenaeum Center. This unique show, featuring a predominantly French cast and production team—except for producer Kelsey Grammer—originated in Lourdes, France, and kicks off its U.S. tour across 12 cities here.
The Story of Saint Bernadette
The musical recounts the life of Bernadette Soubirous, known as Saint Bernadette of Lourdes. In 1858, the 14-year-old daughter of a poor family reported multiple apparitions of a young woman—believed to be the Virgin Mary—in a local grotto. She urged the construction of a chapel there. Her visions sparked controversy in the community, leading to doubt, condemnation, and even threats of institutionalization. By 1862, the Catholic Church validated the apparitions, establishing Our Lady of Lourdes as a major pilgrimage site.
This straightforward narrative suits a pageant-style musical rooted in faith traditions. Audiences, including several nuns at a recent performance, found it deeply moving.
Standout Performances and Score
The lush, choral score by composer Grégoire, with lyrics from Lionel Florence and Patrice Guirao, blends melodic depth reminiscent of Frank Wildhorn’s “Jekyll & Hyde” and the works of Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg. Eyma delivers a compelling lead as Bernadette, showcasing Broadway-caliber vocals and sincerity honed through years portraying the role in Europe. Jérémie Roy shines as her devoted yet conflicted father, François, with powerful singing and strong acting.
Impressive Production Values
Under writer-director Serge Denoncourt, the 25-member cast fills the Athenaeum’s stage—one of Chicago’s historic former opera houses now aligned with the neighboring St. Alphonsus Catholic Church’s mission. Stéphane Roy’s innovative set design transforms from digital sheep-herding scenes to grand visuals, creating one of the venue’s largest productions in recent memory.
Future Potential
While not Broadway-bound, the show excels as a spiritually charged musical emphasizing determination and devotion. It suits faith communities and fans of Bernadette’s story, potentially thriving as an enhanced concert highlighting its vocal talents and message.
