Japan’s World Baseball Classic (WBC) roster faces mounting injury concerns, similar to challenges affecting other national teams.

Matsui’s Withdrawal Shakes Japan’s Bullpen Plans

San Diego Padres pitcher Yuki Matsui has pulled out of the WBC after receiving a preliminary selection notice. A recurring back injury, diagnosed as a herniated disc, forced the decision during spring training in Peoria, Arizona.

Matsui becomes the 30th Japanese player to exit the WBC entry list before the official roster announcement. On January 20 (Korean time), he threw 21 pitches in an intrasquad game before the injury resurfaced. Medical evaluation confirmed the herniated disc, his most serious career setback.

“Even pushing further risks worsening the condition, so recovery takes priority,” Matsui stated.

Cautious Recovery Approach

The next day, January 21, Matsui completed a bullpen session without his signature changeup. “I must carefully monitor my condition,” he added.

His manager observed, “Achieving peak form for the WBC proves difficult everywhere. Full participation remains uncertain for talents like Matsui.”

Despite the initial notice, Matsui withdrew to focus on healing.

Wave of Bullpen Injuries Across Japan

Back troubles plague Japanese bullpens. Affected pitchers include those from the Seibu Lions’ Taika Kaima, Hanshin Tigers’ Ishi, and several major leaguers, extending to Matsui.

Matsui, a key reliever, sought a third straight WBC appearance after competing in 2017 and 2023. During Japan’s 2023 championship run, he led the bullpen in innings pitched, nearly setting a record.
