Authorities in Melbourne intervened swiftly on Thursday, March 5, 2026, during the opening night of the Moomba Festival, arresting eight teenagers armed with machetes and other dangerous weapons. Officials state that the action likely prevented serious violence at the crowded event.
Swift Police Response
Security personnel at the festival spotted a young man carrying a knife around 9:15 p.m. and alerted police. Within 10 minutes, officers located the group of eight teens in the Southbank area and arrested them near St Kilda Road.
Weapons and Items Recovered
A search of the suspects uncovered an array of sharp weapons, including two machetes, a meat cleaver, a carving knife, and flick knives. Additional items seized included knuckle dusters, balaclavas, gloves, and drugs.
Arrests and Charges
Two teenagers, aged 16 and 17, remain in custody following interviews. They face charges at a later date. A 16-year-old boy has been charged with possessing prohibited and controlled weapons and is scheduled to appear in court.
