Right-handed pitcher Joe Elbis, once ranked as a top-30 prospect in the Arizona Diamondbacks system, has retired at age 23. Transaction logs confirm his voluntary retirement as of March 6.
Elbis sat out the entire 2025 season after a proming 2024 campaign that landed him at No. 29 on the organization’s prospect list. The reason for his retirement remains undisclosed, though he spent most of 2025 on the restricted list.
Early Career and Breakthrough
gned as a free agent from Caracas, Venezuela, in 2019 as a teenager, Elbis quickly showed potential. He impressed as a starter at Class-A Visalia Rawhide in 2021 but faced setbacks with injuries that delined him for much of 2022.
Progress accelerated in 2023. Elbis posted a 3.75 ERA across 24 starts and 115.1 innings, securing a midseason promotion to High-A Hillsboro. His initial 14 starts there yielded a 4.84 ERA, yet his performance earned him a spot in the top-30 prospects.
2024 Surge and 2025 Setbacks
Elbis dominated early in 2024 with a 2.79 ERA over 16 starts, prompting another promotion to Double-A Amarillo. He adjusted to the tougher competition, recording a 4.60 ERA in eight starts and staying on prospect radars.
The 2025 season brought challenges. Placed on the 15-day injured list on April 4, he moved to the restricted list on April 15 for unspecified reasons. Arizona activated him late in September, but he never returned to the mound.
Organizational Impact
Elbis’s absence highlighted ongoing issues with Arizona’s minor-league pitching depth. Though far from a major-league debut, his departure added to recent losses. The Diamondbacks have nce bolstered their system, with MLB Pipeline’s latest top-30 list featuring x pitchers in the top 15 and three in the top 10.
