Election officials in Tamil Nadu seized ₹2 lakh in unaccounted cash in Madurai shortly after the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) took effect for the 2026 assembly elections. Surveillance teams across the state, including in Vellore, remain on high alert to maintain electoral integrity.
Madurai Cash Seizure During Vehicle Check
On March 15 at around 7:00 PM, the Static Surveillance Team (SST) 3rd Team (B Team), led by Sivagami Sundari, conducted a vehicle inspection in the Rajakkur division of Madurai’s 189-East Assembly Constituency. Authorities discovered Naresh Kumar carrying ₹2 lakh without valid documents. The cash was confiscated and deposited into the government treasury per standard election protocols.
Teams continue routine vehicle checks statewide to prevent violations and ensure fair polls.
Vellore District Bolsters Election Readiness
Vellore District Collector and Election Officer Subbulakshmi directed all departments, flying squads, and static surveillance teams to stay vigilant. In a review meeting at the district collectorate, alongside District Superintendent of Police Sivaraman, officials received detailed guidelines on procedures, monitoring, and rapid response to complaints.
The district’s electoral roll, finalized on February 23, lists 11,33,587 voters: 5,49,654 males, 5,83,769 females, and 164 third-gender voters. Polling occurs at 1,427 booths across 676 locations, with 137 deemed sensitive. Preparations include 1,712 EVMs, 1,712 control units, and 1,855 VVPAT machines.
Each of the five constituencies deploys three flying squads and three static surveillance teams, totaling 15 each. Public complaints can reach the control room via toll-free number, WhatsApp, or C-Vigil app. Authorities prohibit transporting cash over ₹50,000 or gifts exceeding ₹10,000 without documentation.

Kerala, Assam, and Puducherry poll on April 9, with West Bengal’s second phase on April 29. Vote counting occurs on May 4 across all regions.
